The Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), had been conducting the Center of World Intelligence Project for Nuclear Science/Technology and Human Resource Development (hereafter referred to "the Project") in FY2018. The Project aims to contribute to solving problems in nuclear energy field represented by the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. For this purpose, intelligence was collected from all over the world, and basic research and human resource development were promoted by closely integrating/collaborating knowledge and experiences in various fields beyond the barrier of conventional organizations and research fields. The sponsor of the Project was moved from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to JAEA since the newly adopted proposals in FY2018. On this occasion, JAEA constructed a new research system where JAEA-academia collaboration is reinforced and medium-to-long term research/development and human resource development contributing to the decommissioning are stably and consecutively implemented. Among the adopted proposals in FY2018, this report summarizes the research results of the "Research and Development of Transparent Materials for Radiation Shield using Nanoparticles". The present study aims to reduce radiation exposure of workers in debris retrieval/analysis and reduce deterioration of optical and electronic systems in remote cameras. For these purposes, we develop transparent radiation shield by making the shield materials into nanoparticles, and dispersing/solidifying them in epoxy resin. By making B$$_{4}$$C and W into nanoparticles, we will also develop a radiation shield that shields both neutrons and gamma-rays, and also suppresses secondary gamma-rays produced from neutrons.

Effect of chloride ion on corrosion behavior of SUS316L-grade stainless steel in nitric acid solutions containing seawater components under $$gamma$$-ray irradiation

Concerning the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, we investigated the effect of chloride ion on the corrosion behavior of SUS316L stainless steel, which is a typical material for the equipment used in reprocessing, in HNO$$_{3}$$ solution containing seawater components, including under the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation condition. Electrochemical and immersion tests were carried out using a mixture of HNO$$_{3}$$ and artificial seawater (ASW). In the HNO$$_{3}$$ solution containing high amounts of ASW, the cathodic current densities increased and uniform corrosion progressed. This might be caused by strong oxidants, such as Cl$$_{2}$$ and NOCl, generated in the reaction between HNO$$_{3}$$ and Cl$$^{-}$$ ions. The corrosion rate decreased with the immersion time at low concentrations of HNO$$_{3}$$, while it increased at high concentrations. Under the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation condition, the corrosion rate decreased due to the suppression of the cathodic reactions by the reaction between the above oxidants and HNO$$_{2}$$ generated by radiolysis.

Reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel, as typified by F82H, is a promising candidate for structural material of DEMO fusion reactors. To prevent plasma sputtering, tungsten (W) coating was essentially required. This study aims to examine the irradiation effects on hardness and microstructure of vacuum-plasma-spray coated W-F82H steel, with a special emphasis on the impacts of grain-refining induced by frictional stir processing (FSP). It was revealed that the hardness of the VPS-FSP W after ion-irradiation to 5.4 dpa at 800$$^{circ}$$C were not remarkably changed, where bulk W usually exhibited significant irradiation hardening.

This Takasaki symposium was held annually for radiation processing of natural polymers through research cooperation among Asian countries. The symposium includes the presentations of research outcomes on radiation processing of starches, silk proteins and marine carbohydrates. In starch and cellulose researches, radiation crosslinking of biodegradable polysaccharides was achieved by modifying it to be water-soluble paste. In silk protein researches, pulverization and water-solubilization of the irradiated silk proteins were reported. In marine carbohydrate researches, it was reported that radiation-degraded chitosan and alginate showed promotion effects for plant growth and enhancement of antibacterial properties. In addition, estimation of economic scale of radiation application in Japan and U.S. were introduced. Outcomes of this symposium should contribute the progress in radiation applications in south Asian and Japan. We had the 63 participants consisted of 16 foreign researchers and 60 from domestic organizations. This proceeding compiles the invited and contributed papers.

Status of international and domestic standardization activity on radiation processing level dose

Process controll/quarity assurance based on dosimetric result is performed in radio-sterilirization processing of health-care products and foods. Dosimetry systems used for this purpose should be calibrated against, in other words, be tracable to international or domestic standard. This paper reviews the present status on dose standardization activity is reviewed refering to progress in documented standards.

Emerging applications of radiation processing using EB

There are many products such as button batteries for watches, and radial tires applied by technology of radiation processing. These products were developed and commercialized by using features of radiation processing such as "modification of commercial product" and "homogeneous reaction in whole material" which cannot be realized by chemical processing. Low energy electron beam is available for the effective irradiation of nonwoven fabric owing to its high porosity. Graft polymerization produces the filter for removal of metal ions in silicon wafer cleaning liquid and cesium in tap water by using the nonwoven fabric as trunk polymers.
